I’m glad to see VOICE’s reach expanding online as long as it doesn’t replace the printed version. I’m a former newspaper guy so I’m beholden to print and I value the tactile product produced every month. It’s portable, it’s ever-present (calling to you from the boxes when you walk by), and it has value just because we bothered to print it. Pictures and design make it harder to pass up, things that would be lost to some extent online.
In this computer age when people are being bombarded by hundreds of e-mails per day, it’s much easier to hit the delete key when a link to the VOICE arrives in your overcrowded ‘in’ box. Once it’s deleted, chances are the person won’t seek it out again, whereby the printed version has a shelf life. If I walk by the VOICE box today and don’t grab it cus I’m late for a meeting, it’s there beckoning to me again tomorrow.
So, congrats on the online VOICE. But if we’re counting votes, be it hanging chads or otherwise, count me in for keeping the printed product, too. Thanks for asking.
Thanks for the better coverage of students lately. I’d like to see more.
It is time to save a tree and spare the expense of publication of the written word. All campus papers should be like this, especially the large volume of the annual budget.
